The curriculum involves 1350 hours to satisfy Georgia state requirements. The course includes instruction and practical experience in cutting, hair coloring, perming, customer service, personal appearance
and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, sanitation, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

*Graduates are prepared to become an entry level in hair design.

HAIR DESIGN COURSE OVERVIEW

Course Hours: 1350 clock hours

The course is divided into classroom instruction and clinic learning experiences.

  1. Classroom Instruction: The first 250 hours are devoted entirely to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices. Your classroom time from 250 to 1350 hours is divided into theory classes, along with five (5) areas: cutting, coloring, texture, and makeup. Each area has a specialist in the field who conducts the specialty classes. The classes may also include guest artists, retail, motivation, self-improvement, and professional development. After completing 1200 hours, you will also participate in Final Phase classes that specifically prepare you for the State Board examinations.  
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: After the first 250 hours of classroom training, a portion of the remaining 1100 hours is spent on the clinic classroom where you will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using mini-class, clinic worksheets, and practical evaluations developed specifically for monitoring progress. This is also when you begin experiencing your clinic classroom education on paying guests in the clinic classroom area. 

HAIR DESIGN COURSE OUTLINE

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School Atlanta for the hair design program will be divided into three phases:

  1. Core Curriculum: A 250-hour series of modules that instills the basic fundamentals.  Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral and practical testing methods.  Students must successfully complete the Core Curriculum prior to advancing to the Adaptive Curriculum.
  2. Adaptive Curriculum: May occur from 251 to 675 hours and/or Adaptive curriculum has been completed you will enter a new phase of specialty classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to continue building you into a beauty industry.
  3. Creative Curriculum: You may spend your last 675 hours at Paul Mitchell The School Atlanta in “high gear” by dressing, acting, and working like a beauty industry professional. You will use your own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare yourself for your future beauty industry career.

HAIR DESIGN COURSE SUBJECTS

The instructional program of Paul Mitchell The School Atlanta meets or exceeds the state requirements:

Pre-clinical Classroom Phase: The student is required to complete a minimum of 250 hours of classroom training before he/she is allowed to perform clinical service on guest.

    2. Cleansing and disinfection
    3. EPA; OSHA, infection control standards; blood spill procedures
    4. AIDS; HIV; and communicable diseases
  1. Theory of Permanent Waving:   45 theory hours/45 clock hours
    1. The chemistry of permanent wave solution and its reaction
    2. The chemistry of relaxers and their reactions; and
    3. The principles of permanent wave and rod placement.
  1. Theory of Hair Coloring : 45 theory hours/45 clock hours
    1. The chemistry of color;
    2. Principles of color application; and
    3. The  chemical reastion of hair color.
  1. Theory of Hair and Scalp Treatment and Conditioning: 20 theory hours/20 clock hours
    1. Hair analysis;
    2. Scalp condition; and
    3. Treatments
  1. Theory of Hair Cutting: 30 theory hours/30 clock hours
    1. Proper handling and care of instruments
  1. Theory of Shampooing: 15 theory hours/15 clock hours
    1. Proper procedure of shampooing;
    2. Knowledge of shampooing formulas; and
    3. Water temperature
  1. Theory of Hairdressing / Hairstyling: 45 theory hours/45 clock hours
    1. 20 hours training on mannequins
    2. 25 hours on live models (without compensation)

MINIMUM TOTAL CLOCK HOURS (CORE PHASE)  250 

Level 1(Core): Instruction shall be provided by a licensed master cosmetology instructor or licensed hair designer instructor. Each school or licensed instructor shall require each student to obtain two hundred fifty (250) total hours of Level 1 training before the student performs clinical services on a client. Of these two hundred fifty (250) hours, two hundred (200) shall be theory and training on mannequins, and the final fifty (50) hours shall be on live models in the curriculum as stated below.

Clinic Classroom Phase: After the student completes the first 250 hours of classroom training the student must cover the following subjects, which will include clinic classroom services performed on guests and classroom training.

  1. Laboratory- Dispensary (The Color Bar) shall include practical training in preparing germicidal solutions, shampoos, tint and bleaches, practical training in washing and sanitizing all equipment in the beauty salon.

  1. Hair Dressing, Shampoo, & Comb-out shall include shampoos, comprising dry, soap-free, oil and reconditioning; wet curls, thermo-curling, blow drying, hair styles, comb outs and all types of pressing; hot combs.

Level 2 (Adaptive and Creative): Service application hours on live subjects may begin when a student has completed the required two hundred fifty (250) Level 1 theory hours in the above curriculum with a minimum passing score of seventy five percent (75%). The student may then progress to the clinic floor to perform the required 1100 Level 2 service application hours on live subjects.

The institution offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but is not limited to training in professionalism, resume’ development, job interview preparation and job search skills.

HAIR DESIGN PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 1350-hour course:

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on each assigned theory exam. If a test score is below the 70% the student must retake the test until the minimum score is met.  
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation: Students must receive a grade of 70% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule.  All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 70% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. .
  3. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using  the Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.

Grading Scale:     A  =  90-100% B  =  80-89% C  =  70-79% Below 70%  =  Failing

HAIR DESIGN INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES AND METHODS

The Hair Design 1350 clock hour course is provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lecture, demonstration, distance education, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
